    There's much to see in San Francisco and we'll take the opportunity to do lots of walking around as we explore some of our most interesting places. Come join us as we experience the Hyde Street Cable Car Line, one of our most popular sights and activities and a walk down The Crookedest Street - Lombard St. On to Coit Tower, Telegraph Hill, Hyde Street Pier, the ships there and the Cable Car Museum. We'll stop and walk around Nob Hill, with history of the Pacific Union Club and all the local gossip, Grace Cathedral - Ghiberti doors and more. We'll tour Chinatown, Old St Mary's Church built in 1850 and the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese from the Rockies to the Pacific, Portsmouth Square, Jackson Square, the original settlement of Yerba Buena. We'll discuss the beatnics of the fifties, Vesuvio Bar where Ginsberg and others hung out, Old St Mary's Park , and St Peter and Paul's Church. History will be reviewed in Pacific Heights, Fisherman's Wharf, and Fort Mason. At the Golden Gate Bridge, there will be a photo opportunity and discussion of the Military activities in the now Golden Gate Nation Recreation Area before heading to Fort Point (Winfield Scott), renovated for harbor defense in anticipation of the Civil War. Hopefully there will be wind surfers out in the most challenging of currents. We'll drive by Sea Cliff to Golden Gate Park, stop at the Japanese Tea Gardens, tour the Haight-Ashbury district (Summer of Love-Flower Childeren 1960's), and weather permitting, stop a top Twin Peaks. Starts where the city itself originated, at Portsmouth Square in today's Chinatown, exploring the markets, hidden temples and fascinating history of the real community behind the tourist attraction. Moves to Nob Hill (with its Gothic cathedral and grand hotels), stopping at the historic Palace Hotel's Garden Court, one of the nation's most magnificent public rooms. We drive up to Pacific Heights to see some of its famous and architecturally significant homes, cruise through exclusive Seacliff, and take in the view from the classical Palace of the Legion of Honor. From the Cliff House above Ocean Beach, we move back into Golden Gate Park, to experience its exquisite Japanese Tea Garden and,or the thrilling Earthquake! Exhibit. The day winds down with the view of "Postcard Row," a drive through our outstanding Civic Center, and finally a ramble down the Crookedest Street in the World, where we view Coit Tower crowning Telegraph Hill. Or, after lunch, we can drive across the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods, for ninety minutes inside this primeval redwood forest, maybe returning via ferry from Sausalito to the Crookedest Street in the World, before driving through North Beach to the panoramic view from Coit Tower.     On our way down to the beautiful sea side towns of Monterrey and Carmel we'll bypass some of the Peninsula's scenery including Palo Alto, Stanford University, San Jose, and Silicon Valley, haven to some of the largest high tech industries. We'll meander through Salinas Valley, home of John Steinbeck. and stop at Cannery Row, named for the writer. All visitors will the enjoy the wonders of the Monterrey Bay Aquarium, inside and out.     The day begins between 6:30 and 7am and crossing the Bay. Breakfast is in the Central Valley, famous for it's rich volcanic soil. It is a booming agricultural region nest known for almonds, grapes, tomatoes, peaches and strawberries. We pass though the cattle and horse ranching lands of the Sierra Nevada foothills, continuing on through California gold country and the old gold rush town of Maraposa. We reach the Merced River Canyon and wind our way along the river into Yosemite National Park.

    Maps and guides in hand, we begin with a 1 ½ hour tour through Yosemite's glaciated valley famous for Yosemite Falls (tallest waterfall in North America and fifth tallest on earth), El Capitan, Half-Dome, Bridalvail Falls, Sentinel Dome and many more. The valley is approximately 1 mile wide (1.5 Km) and 7 miles (10 Km) long and we stop and get out a number of vantage points, inluding Inspiration Point at 4500 feet above sea level. Yosemite is a mecca for rockclimbers and depending upon the time of the year, the sight of people climbing El Capitan's 3,00 ft (1Km) sheer rock face is quite amazing.

    After the tour, we stop for the afternoon at the base of Yosemite Falls. Here you get a chance to walk to the base of the falls, get lunch and visit the main visitor's center, Ansel Adams Gallery, Awananee Hotel, rent a bike of hike some of the shorter trails.

    Then it is down to the Giant Sequoias in the southern portion of Yosemite National Park where there are trees you can drive through! Come see nature's wonders!Although you could spend 3 weeks, 3 hrs on your own is enough time to experience what has made Yosemite one of America's most popular national parks.     No trip to California would be complete without a visit to Yosemite National Park. The park covers 1189 square miles of some of the world's most spectacular scenery. Waterfalls, glaciated cliffs, bears, hiking, giant Sequoias, swimming, snow, amazing trails, rockclimber spotting, campfires, sunny waether, diving into ice cold lakes,meeeting new people and having a laugh are among the never to be forgotten experiences. We're into our fifth year of offering backpackers and travellers the best way to experience Yosemite in a relaxed, fun filled atmosphere at a very good price. Because we mix the hiking up and include a free day where you can choose the trails you wish, nobody is under pressure and nobody is held back. M The itinerary varies depending upon the time of the year, weather , etc., but we know the park so well that there'll always be an interesting schedule and bring you to Yosemite's most spectacular hikes. The campsite we use is pretty good by American standards. It has a good bathroom and shower facilties, fresh drinking water and is situated in the picturesque Merced River Canyon close to the river. We stay at the same camp site for the 3 nights and drive to the various hikes and sights. All you need to hike with is a day pack.

    Camping is easy, but cooperation is important. Don't worry is you've never camped before, many people haven't. We supply all the camping equipment , using quality tents, camping and cooking equi[pment. Everybody is expected to participate in setting up and breacking down camp. We provide the food, but not the chefs. You guys are the cooks, waiters, dishwashers and of course, the guests. We stop at a supermarket and buy everything we need. The fare is a mixture of chicken, beef and vegitarian, all you can eat and tasty. Most people eat better with us than they have in their previous travels. You will need a sleeping bag. One can be rented for $5. You will need sneaklers or hiking boots, shorts, T-shirts, swim wear and something warm in case of a change in waether. June through eptember is hot and sunny. Also featured is an award winning audio tour (available in 6 languages) in the prison Cell House with actual interviews of former guards and inmates. SEAT available for wheelchair users and visitor unable to walk up the quarter mile,12% grade hill. In addition to the prison, Alcatraz features some of the most spectacular views of the city and Golden Gate from the beautifully landscaped Agave Trail. The trail begins near the ferryboat landing on the east side of Alcatraz and continues just above the water level to the southern tip of the island. A walk along the trail winds through the protected bird sanctuary, ending at a stone stairway which leads to the parade ground, formerly ringed by the houses of guards and their families.
